PFD HOCKEY'S HISTORY The Paterson Firefighters Hockey Club was formed in the winter of 1996 by two Fire Department members, Pete Crampton and Ed McGrady. The Firefighters quickly joined a house league in Monsey, NY for their inaugural season together. In their first season they had a mix of talent yet made the playoffs in the Men's checking league. The second season approached rather quickly and PFD Hockey joined the Floyd Hall Arena house league located on the Campus of Montclair University. It was much closer to home for Paterson's Bravest and the guys again made a late season push but failed to make the playoffs. It was a tough season for the bravest but things were looking up. In the summer of 1997 the club was approached by the newly formed Police FireFighters Hockey League to come on board. The Bravest became a Charter Member of the PFHL. In the Inaugural PFHL Season, PFD Hockey sent five members to the PFHL All-Star game, played in the Philadelphia Spectrum, to represent the Northern Division. PFD Hockey finished the season with first place on the line losing to the high flying Suffolk 5th Pct. in Suffolk, NY. PFD went into the playoffs as the number two seed. The club played real strong in the playoffs and went on to be crowned the Harry Kelly Memorial Cup League Champions.
The club played the First Annual PFD Hockey Benefit Game at seasons end with the NJ Municipal Police to raise funds for Colin O'Keefe, son of Paterson Firefighter Tim O'Keefe. The game was a tremendous success and a great sense of pride was formed by both teams (photo below) and many friendships were created. |
